What is the StoryBrand Messaging skill?

StoryBrand Messaging is the SB7 framework from Donald Miller’s Building a StoryBrand, packaged as a free skill your AI agent loads on demand. It rewrites your copy as a story where the customer is the hero and you are the guide — naming their external, internal and philosophical problem, a three-step plan, and one direct call to action.

Key concepts from Building a StoryBrand your agent applies

The SB7 Framework

A character has a problem, meets a guide, who gives them a plan, calls them to action, helping them avoid failure and end in success.

Customer as Hero

Position your customer as the protagonist and your brand as the trusted guide with empathy and authority.

The One-Liner

Craft a concise statement that communicates what you offer in a way that makes people want to hear more.

Clear CTAs

Use direct calls to action (Buy Now, Schedule a Call) paired with transitional CTAs (Download the Guide).

Villain & Stakes

Define the external, internal, and philosophical problems your customer faces to create emotional resonance.

When to use StoryBrand Messaging — and when not to

Reach for it when

  • Your homepage opens with your company’s story and mission instead of the problem the visitor arrived with.
  • Visitors read the whole page, nod along, and leave without ever being asked to do one specific thing.
  • Your copy lists what the product does but never names what it costs the customer to keep doing nothing.
  • You need a one-liner for a bio or a conference intro and every draft sounds vague or like a feature list.

Reach for something else when

  • Nobody understands what category you are even in — that is positioning; run Obviously Awesome first.
  • The words are fine but the deal is not — $100M Offers rebuilds the bonuses, guarantee and price.
  • You need the whole machine — channels, budgets, nurture, referrals — not just copy: 1-Page Marketing Plan.
  • You are writing cold outbound to people who have never heard of you — that is Predictable Revenue’s job.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the StoryBrand Messaging skill?

Run npx skills add wondelai/skills/storybrand-messaging --global. It takes about 30 seconds and needs no account. The StoryBrand Messaging skill then works in Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent — anything that reads the open agentskills.io format — and your agent loads it on its own when a task calls for it. It is free and MIT-licensed, and the source is at https://github.com/wondelai/skills.

Which book is the StoryBrand Messaging skill based on?

It packages Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller — CEO of StoryBrand, New York Times bestselling author. The skill distils the book's method into instructions your agent follows while it works, covering the sb7 framework, customer as hero and the one-liner. It sits in the Marketing & Messaging part of the library.

How is this different from the Made to Stick and Obviously Awesome skills?

They are three layers of the same problem, and they run in order. Obviously Awesome decides what you are and who you are for — the context. StoryBrand structures how you say it, as a story the customer stars in and you guide. Made to Stick decides whether any single sentence survives being repeated. Skip the first and StoryBrand will produce a beautifully structured page about the wrong comparison. All three are free, and your agent loads whichever the task calls for.

What are the seven parts of the SB7 framework?

A character wants something. They have a problem. They meet a guide who shows empathy and authority. The guide gives them a plan, calls them to action, and the story makes plain what failure costs and what success looks like. Your customer is the character; you are never the hero. The skill fills all seven for your business and scores the result, docking points for a missing internal problem, a vague ask, or stakes nobody painted.

Won’t every website that uses this end up sounding identical?

That is the real risk. SB7 is a structure, not a script, and applied lazily it produces the same “You want X. We get it. Here’s our three-step plan” page you have seen a hundred times. Keep the structure, throw away the phrasing: have the agent produce the BrandScript first, then write from it in your own voice. Running Made to Stick over the result is the cheapest way to catch lines that are structurally correct and completely generic.

Does StoryBrand work for B2B and technical products?

Yes, with one adjustment: the hero is a person with a job on the line, not “the enterprise”. The internal problem for a VP of Engineering — looking reckless in front of the board — does more work than any feature table. Where it strains is complex multi-stakeholder buying, because the champion, the budget holder and the end user want different things. Ask for a separate BrandScript per role rather than one blended page that speaks to nobody.
