Blue Ocean Strategy
Create uncontested market space with value innovation
Create uncontested market space instead of competing head-to-head using W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne's Blue Ocean Strategy. This skill helps your AI agent identify value innovation opportunities and design strategy canvases that make competition irrelevant.

What is the Blue Ocean Strategy skill?
Competing better is not the point of Blue Ocean Strategy, the free AI agent skill built from W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne’s book. It has your agent chart the factors your industry competes on, apply the Eliminate–Reduce–Raise–Create grid to them, and design an offering that raises buyer value and drops cost at the same time.
Key concepts from Blue Ocean Strategy your agent applies
Value Innovation
Simultaneously pursue differentiation and low cost — break the value-cost trade-off.
Strategy Canvas
Visualize your industry's competitive factors and find where you can diverge from the pack.
Four Actions Framework
Eliminate, Reduce, Raise, and Create factors to reconstruct buyer value in a new way.
Six Paths Framework
Look across industries, strategic groups, buyer groups, complementary offerings, functional-emotional appeal, and time.
Tipping Point Leadership
Overcome organizational hurdles — cognitive, resource, motivational, and political — to execute the shift.
When to use Blue Ocean Strategy — and when not to
Reach for it when
- Every player in your category competes on the same five factors and yours is a slightly better version.
- You keep adding features to justify a premium while costs climb and the differentiation never quite arrives.
- Deals come down to price because buyers genuinely cannot tell the alternatives apart.
- You suspect the people refusing to buy your category outnumber the customers everyone is fighting over.
Reach for something else when
- You already have the space and need conservative buyers to trust it — Crossing the Chasm sequences that.
- The offer is right and only the description is wrong — Obviously Awesome is the positioning skill.
- You want willingness-to-pay evidence before designing anything — Monetizing Innovation puts pricing first.
- The company cannot execute the strategy it already has — Traction EOS installs the operating rhythm.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install the Blue Ocean Strategy skill?
Run npx skills add wondelai/skills/blue-ocean-strategy --global. It takes about 30 seconds and needs no account. The Blue Ocean Strategy skill then works in Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent — anything that reads the open agentskills.io format — and your agent loads it on its own when a task calls for it. It is free and MIT-licensed, and the source is at https://github.com/wondelai/skills.
Which book is the Blue Ocean Strategy skill based on?
It packages Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim & Renée Mauborgne — INSEAD professors, co-directors of Blue Ocean Strategy Institute. The skill distils the book's method into instructions your agent follows while it works, covering value innovation, strategy canvas and four actions framework. It sits in the Strategy & Growth part of the library.
What counts as value innovation rather than plain differentiation?
Differentiation usually costs more and low cost usually strips value out; value innovation refuses that trade. The test is whether your move does both at once, and the Four Actions grid is how you fund it: you eliminate and reduce factors the industry competes on out of habit, and spend what you save raising and creating factors buyers actually care about. A move that only raises value is premium positioning, not a blue ocean.
How is this different from the Good Strategy Bad Strategy skill?
Blue Ocean generates a move; Rumelt tests whether any move deserves to be called strategy. This skill is generative — it produces candidate value-innovation plays by looking across industries, buyer groups, and complementary offerings. Good Strategy Bad Strategy is evaluative: it asks whether you have named the real obstacle and whether your actions cohere. Run them together and the canvas gives you options while the kernel forces you to choose one.
Is the book still worth reading if I have the skill?
The skill carries the instruments — strategy canvas, Four Actions, the six paths, the buyer utility map — and will build them from your own industry data. The book’s value is different: extended cases like Cirque du Soleil and Southwest train your eye to recognise the pattern when it shows up in a business that looks nothing like theirs. The frameworks are mechanical; the recognition is not.
Will the agent actually find me a blue ocean?
It will structure the search and pressure-test what comes out, which is honestly the useful part — but the canvas is only as good as your reading of the industry, and a proposed move is a hypothesis you still have to sell to real buyers. Two caveats the book itself makes: uncontested space attracts imitators, and the framework was built by studying moves that had already succeeded.
